Recording a PowerPoint presentation

How to record a PowerPoint presentation using the Recording Ribbon.

One advantage of recording a PowerPoint presentation using the Recording ribbon is that recording does not have to be done in one session. You can record a few slides, save your PowerPoint file, come back at a later to record additional slides. 

Create or open a PowerPoint presentation

Please note: PowerPoint lets you read from an onscreen script during recording. If you want to read from an on-screen script, then add your script to the notes section of each slide.

Click the Recording tab and click Record Slide Show

Click the Recording tab [1] to see the recording options.

If you do not have the Recording tab you may either:

  • Add the Recording tab to PowerPoint
  • Or use the Slide Show tab and select, Record from...

Click  Record Slide Show  [2]. If you click the menu triangle, then you can choose to Record from the beginning or Record from the current slide. Record from the current slide allows you to resume recording at any point if you need to record your presentation in chunks.

Your screen may look slightly different depending on the resolution of your monitor. For instance, the Notes section may appear on the right-hand side of your screen.

  • Settings  [1] to select your microphone (required) and camera (optional).
  • Notes  [2] to display your notes over your presentation. Your notes will not be visible on the recording. You can increase or decrease the size of your notes by press the size buttons [3].
  • Ink color  [4] to write over your PowerPoint presentations (optional.)
  • Record button  [5a] to begin your recording on the current (displayed) slide.
  • Navigation arrow [6] to move forward in your presentation.
  • Stop button [5b] to stop your recording.
  • Replay button [5c] to review your recording.
  • Clear button [7] to clear the recording on the slide or on all slides. This cannot be undone.
  • Close button (x) [8] to close the recording window, and to go back to your PowerPoint presentation.

After you finish recording, your presentation. you can export your PowerPoint presentation as an .MP4 video file.
